Shelter Box
Providing shelter to those in need around the world
Disasters can occur anywhere and anytime. Some are acts of nature, and some are acts of war. Many organizations respond with food, water and medicine to help people survive. Housing, however, presents a major problem. That which is provided is often inadequate. Many families lack privacy as they share a common living space. And some families can no longer live together.
The beginnings
Frustrated with this situation, Tom Henderson wanted to help. A former Royal Navy search and rescue diver, Henderson had first-hand knowledge of disaster relief.
In 1999 after some research, he came up with ShelterBox - housing in a box. Others, including people in the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in the U.K., liked the idea. So in 2000 this club, of which Tom is a member, adopted ShelterBox as its major project. The 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia changed ShelterBox's history. Money poured into the club, and volunteers provided assistance to thousands. ShelterBox went from sending 2,600 boxes in 204 to 22,000 in 2005.
