Celebrity Chefs

These chefs are making people happy, one dish at a time

Many of today's famous chefs don't simply cook exquisite food. They wear many hats – television host, restaurant owner, author and even philanthropist - and bring joy to viewers, readers and eaters everywhere.

Jamie Oliver: England's young and influential chef
Jamie Oliver got his start in cooking at age 8 by peeling potatoes at his dad's restaurant and became an expert vegetable chopper by 11. After completing catering school, his youthful approach to cooking caught the eye of a television producer and The Naked Chef was born. The television series showcased Oliver's casual style and simple, hearty meals made with natural ingredients. Since the success of The Naked Chef, 39-year-old Oliver has authored 11 books and hosted numerous TV cooking shows.

The Fifteen Foundation
In 2002, with the help of his show Jamie's Kitchen, Oliver helped establish the Fifteen Foundation, a charity for which he now serves as one of ten trustess. Oliver combined two of his passions - opening a first-class restaurant and giving disadvantaged youth a chance to become chefs. He trained 15 young people who were at risk and helped them opened a modern Italian restaurant. Since that first restaurant opened in London in 2002, three similar eateries have opened in Europe and Australia, all with their own foundations.

Conversation A

Jack: Come on, Laura. Let's go. I can't wait to hit the beach!
Laura: Wait, Jack. Did you put on your sunscreen?
Jack: No, I don't need sunscreen. I want to get a tan.
Laura: But you don't want to get a sunburn, do you?
Jack: Of course not. I don't want to look like a lobster!
Laura: Then use sunscreen. You can still get a tan, and you won't run the risk of damaging your skin.
Jack: OK. I'll put some on when we get to the beach.
Laura: Put some on now. You need to apply it at least 30 minutes before you go out in the sun.
Jack: OK.

Laura: It turns brown when it's time to put on more sunscreen.
Jack: Cool.
Laura: And when the color turns to cream, it's time to get out of the sun.

Some people do take the risks seriously. However, they still want the tanned look without the resulting skin damage. hey get their tans from a bottle of tanning lotion. Not all Americans want tans, however.

China replaces US as India's largest trade partner

from http://in.finance.yahoo.com/

By fe Bureau

China has emerged as India's largest trading partner, replacing US in 2008-09. Apart from increasing trade engagement with the neighbouring country and weak demand for foreign goods in the US, which is reeling under recession contributed to this.

According to a reply filed by minister of state for commerce Jyotiraditya Scindia in Lok Sabha on Monday, bilateral trade engagement between India and China stood at Rs 1,63,202 crore (nearly $ 36 billion) in April to February 2008-09, an increase of nearly 7% over Rs 1,52,713 crore in the year ago period. In the same period under consideration, bilateral trade between India and the US dipped 7.5% and stood at Rs 1,55,353 crore (approximately $ 34 billion).

Exports from India had increased 3.4% in dollar terms and 17% in rupee terms during 2008-09.

Significantly, trade deficit - the difference between exports and imports - with China expanded 41% in the period under consideration and stood at Rs 92, 676 crore (nearly $20.3 billion), pointing towards fast expanding imports from China. This is nearly one fifth (18%) of India's trade deficit during the period under consideration, the highest for any of its trade partners.

According to data available with the commerce ministry, imports from China expanded 28% and stood at Rs 1,27,938 crore ($ 28.10 billion) in April to February period of 2008-09. In fact, increase in large number of chemical and metal items import from China has been of concern for India, which has initiated many anti-dumping and safeguard duty mechanism investigations to ascertain if Chinese companies are adopting any unfair trade practice.

Historically, the US has been India's top trading partner. Exports to the US have mostly been greater than imports, as a result of which India has enjoyed a trade surplus. However, hit by the economic recession, demand for goods in the US plummeted, impacting exports from India as well.

20090801 -- Cool Ideas for Hot Weather (1)

Cool Ideas for Hot Weather

Tips to help you keep cool this summer

Finding ways to beat the summer heat can be difficult but not impossible! Try a few of these fun ideas, and you'll cool off in no time.

Eat spicy food
Spicy food causes you to sweat. And as the sweat evaporates, it cools your body down.

Use cold sheets
Put away your blankets and sleep between sheets. Put your sheets in a plastic bag and then in the refrigerator about two hours before bedtime. Cold sheets can help lower your body temperature, which should help you fall asleep more easily.

Keep it light
Because dark colors absorb heat, wearing light-colored clothing keeps you more comfortable on hot days. Also, natural material like cotton lets air pass through, which cools your body.

Add water
Water also helps get rid of the heat. But if you're at school or work, it's not possible to take a nice, refreshing shower. Do the next best thing and run cool water on your wrists. In addition, you can run some on a towel and put it on the back of your neck.

Freeze some fruit
Snack on frozen watermelon and other fruit for a tasty way to beat this summer's heat!
