Can We Do Without Zoos?

Is keeping wild animals where people can see them a good idea?

Jared: So where do you think we should take Scott when he visits this weekend?

Ben: Let's take him to the zoo. Our city has one of the best in the country.

Jared: The zoo? Are you serious? You support putting animals in cages and stressing them out by having thousands of people stare at them?

Ben: Our city zoo has natural habitats for the animals. They live almost the same way they do in the wild. And they have places to hide so they can avoid people.

Jared: They may have natural habitats but they small natural habitats. Think about tigers. In the wild they can travel hundreds of kilimeters. In the zoo they just pace back and forth in the little tiny space.

Ben: Zoos are necessary these days, Jared. They protect endangered animals and help to bring them. Without zoo breeding programs, many endagered species would disappear.

Jared: Yeah, but 95 percent of animals in the zoo are not in danger. And less than one percent of animals bred in zoo are released into the wild.

Ben: But zoos are vital for education when people see endangered and wild animals they are more likely to help protect animals.
