Business Myths
Five mistakes that could kill your business
Operating your own business can be exciting, but it can also be risky. Avoiding the five mistakes below could help you limit your risks and make your business successful.
Myth 1: I need a big idea
Many people think their business needs a great idea to set it apart from the competition. Often, this leads them to put off starting or expanding a business while waiting for a big idea that never comes. While big ideas are great, not every business needs one. Many well-known corporations, including Sony and Hewlett-packard, started before having a great idea of what they would make or sell.
Myth 2: I have a good idea, so I'm ready
An idea, no matter how good, is just an idea. Far more important is a good business plan. A realistic plan, based on accurate information, maps out the path a business will take. It can also identify weaknesses and help a business avoid unnecessary traps. Planning is so important that even older businesses must usually submit plans to get financing or credit.
