20090829 -- How Golf Greens Work (2)

How Golf Greens Work

Location, location
Where you put the green is also important. It needs plenty of sunlight and good airflow over the green On many golf courses, you will find electric fans blowing over the green to make sure the airflow is perfect.

Then you choose perfect grass. There are different varieties for nearly every climae and situation.

Keeping it up
Sand, perfect drainage and a good location eliminate a huge number of variables and problems. But now the grass is totally dependent on its keepers There are no nutrients in the sand itself, so all the nutrients come from the people taking care of the green.

Once the green is established, you start in on maintenance. This includes daily mowing with a precision greens mower, watering, fertilizing, applying chemicals, aerating and general coddling.

As you can see, it takes a lot of work to create grass this perfect! But, if you follow these steps, you too could create a living carpet. In fact, you can have a real golf green in you yard. These are companies that will help you do this.

20090831 -- The Netbook Revolution (1)

The Netbook Revolution

How the Eee PC has redefined mobile computing
Way back in 2007, Taipei-based ASUSTeK Computer introduced the Eee PC, a cheap, basic laptop computer about the size of a hardcover book. Originally designed to be both affordable and portable, the Eee PC handled simple tasks such as writing, web surfing and e-mail.

At the time, most laptops were scaled-down versions of desktop computers, and critics complained about Eee's lack of power and features. In spite of the naysayers, Asus sold more than 300,000 Eee PCs in the first few months. Other companies rushed to follow, and now nearly every major PC manufacturer has jumped into the still growing netbook market.

Through it all, the Eee PC has continued to evolve and improve. Newer versions include an Eee PC tablet that allow users to navigate by means of a touch screen. Also out is the Eee PC keyboard, a computer in a keyboard that connects to any LCD monitor or big-screen TV. In many ways, the Eee PC caught the PC industry off guard. The product does many of the things people use computers for, at a much cheaper price. Though there will always be a market for "full" computers, the Eee PC taught the PC industry a valuable lesson: Sometimes the basics are all we need.

20090828 -- How Golf Greens Work (1)

How Golf Greens Work
There's more to a golf green than what appears on the surface

Let's imagine that you are standing on a beautiful golf green. The sun is shining, the sky is a bright blue, the birds are chirping in the nearby trees. It is a perfect day.

Now you look down at your feet. The grass is absolutely perfect too. Have you ever wondered how they get the grass on a golf green to be this perfect?

It starts with a backhoe
A backhoe digs a nice big hole the size of the green. The hole might be 12 or 16 inches deep. In the most advanced systems, this hole gets completely lined with plastic to create a gigantic, waterproof tub. The bottom of this tub is covered with drainage pipes and several inches of gravel. A layer of special fabric covers the gravel. Then a foot or so of fine sand goes on top of the fabric and fills up the hole.

You can see what is happening. The grass is not growing in "dirt" at all. The green is very much like a huge flowerpot. The green's grass grows in sand with perfect drainage.

For Love or Money

Conversation B
Adam: Think about this. Let's say Courtney pursues a career in finance. People in that field make plenty of money. But still, there are no guarantees. She could spend years specializing in a certain area only to be laid off. Or her work could be outsourced due to economic changes

Beth: I still think a degree in something like business or engineering would be more practical. Besides, having a degree in one of those fields doesn't mean she couldn't change careers down the road.

Adam: Perhaps, but she could always complement her art degree with a minor in finance. That way, if she can't make enough as an artist in the future, she could work as an accountant for a museum or a gallery.

Beth: Courtney is good at math, but she hates it. Doing accounting for a gallery wouldn't be good. She'd rather have her work hanging in the gallery! Still, she should do something more lucrative and make art her hobby.

For Love or Money

Is it more important to work at a job that pays well or one that makes you happy?

Every day millions of people wake up, get dressed and go to work. For some, time spent on a project at work is the highlight of their day, but for others, the happiness doesn't come until payday. The average worker spends about 2,140 hours a year at work. Should all this time spent working bring joy to the soul or should it just be endured for the benefits the money brings?

Conversation A

Beth: Hey, Adam. I'm worried about my sister Courtney. She's in college and has just declared art as her major.
Adam: Why does that worry you? I've seen her stuff. She's very talented.

Beth: I know. But I'm afraid that once she graduates she won't be able to make ends meet. Most artists only make about 60 percent of what the average worker makes a year. Plus, it's harder for art majors to find full-time work. But she doesn't seem too concerned.

Adam: But you're forgetting that there's more to choosing a career than making money. Countney loves art and that's what's important. Even if she's not rolling in dough, she'll be happy and emotionally satisfied.

Improve Your Business With Bricks

Most companies face their problems by holding meetings. Unfortunately, meetings are not always the best way to resolve problems. Meetings can make it difficult for everyone to participate and can lead people to oversimplify problems. As a result, ideas are lost, misunderstandings occur, and some opinions are ignored. LEGO Serious Play uses play to overcome these difficulties. Participants use bricks to build models that show how they and their organization work. This is done over several rounds of building and then talking about what has been made.

There are many advantages to dealing with problems through play. While playing, everyone gets to participate. More importantly, the process helps people examine problems from different points of view. Does it work? "Oh, it really works," says David Gauntlett, a university professor and Serious Play researcher. "It gets people thinking and responding to each other in a different way."

You never know. The answer to your next problem may not be in discussion or a meeting. It may be in the toy box.

LEGO toys are not just for children anymore
Since 1958, children have loved LEGO bricks, and they are not alone. Parents and teachers are also big fans of the colorful toys. In fact, the bricks are so popular that they have been named "Toy of the Century" – twice!

The popularity of LEGO toys should be no surprise. The LEGO Group has spent much of its history focusing on fun, high-quality toys. Playing with their bricks can improve creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Even the name LEGO – taken from the Danish term leg godt – means "play well."

But LEGO bricks are just toys, right? Wrong. Children, as it turns out, aren't the only people who can benefit from playing with the bricks. In 1995, the LEGO Group's owner wanted to improve the way his company made decisions. With the help of university researchers, LEGO Serious PLAY(LSP) was born. As its heart, LEGO Serious PLAY is a process for improving business performance. But it is also about playing with bricks - seriously.

20090817 -- The Life of Bees (2)

The Life of Bees

When speaking of how people are dependent on bees for survival, we aren't talking about honey or beeswax. Apirists, people who raise bees, keep them for more than just their honey. They contract their bees out to farmers to pollinate their crops. In fact, without bees, we would not be able to eat many fruits and vegetables, including almonds, onions, melons and pumpskins. How do bees pollinate plants? They frequent flowers to collect nectar and pollen to use as food.

As bees travel from flower to flower picking up new pollen, they drop off some of the pollen they've already collect. Plants then use this pollen to reproduce. Both bees and flowers benefit from this process, and so do we. In the United States, bees pollinate 15 to 30 percent of the food people eat.

So the next time you see a bee buzzing around, remember that it's doing more than just making life a little sweeter.

20090816 -- The Life of Bees (1)

The Life of Bees

Bees do more than make your life sweeter
If the bee disappears, people will soon follow. Though this statement might be somewhat exaggerated, the world has recently been reminded of how important bees really are. A strange phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is making bees disappear in various places around the globe. In some cases, entire colonies have disappeared. The Western honeybee, one of the most well-known bee species, has been particularly affected. And, according to some studies, CCD has the potential to cause billions of dollars in losses.

Why are these small, fuzzy insects so vital to the world? Bees do something that no other insect can do - they make honey. Honey contains everything needed to sustain life - including water! But this sweet substance is just one of the many products given to us by bees. Most bee species also produce beeswax, which is found in hundreds of products such as candles, soaps and some skin creams.

Get Ready, Get Set, Get Muddy!

As adventure races gain popularity, the Muddy Buddy stands out
You stand at the starting line, ready to meet the challenge that lies ahead. In a few moments you will take on the Muddy Buddy. This unique and entertaining race will have you smiling – and dirty –in no time.

Unlike a traditional race, the Muddy Buddy requires each racer to compete with a partner. The "buddies" take turns running and riding a bicycle over a six- to seven-mile course. Along the way, they come across five obstacles. Racers work to overcome these obstacles while taking turns running and biking.

For most teams though, the best part of the race comes at the end. Here, partners must crawl together through a 60-foot-long mud pit. Smiling racers are covered from head to toe in mud when they finally cross the finish line. The race is all in fun. After the race, awards are given to the fastest teams, And one award is even given to the team wearing the best costume. Every muddy buddy feels like a winner, albeit a muddy one!

20090814 -- Cruising Down to Mexico (3)

Cruising Down to Mexico

A diver's paradise
We arrived next at Mexico's largest island, Cozumel. Historically, the area was an important center of worship for the Maya. The region later fell into decline and remained that way until underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau discovered it in the early 1960s. Once again, the island came to life as tourists visited what Cousteau called, "one of the greatest diving destinations in the world!"

An undersea garden
To view the underwater wonders, we boarded a much smaller boat and motored an hour out to sea to reach the world-famous Palancar Reef. With snorkels on, we jumped into the warm water and began drifting above the world's second largest barrier reef system. Sea turtles and brightly colored reef fish immediately became visible. Even more impressive than sea creatures, though, was the reef itself! The giant coral mountain looked like an undersea garden, boasting sea fans and sponges in brilliant shades of purples, oranges and other amazing colors. As tempting as it was to bring back a piece of coral as a souvenir, the reef is protected. Instead, I took lots of underwater pictures to go along with my memories of Cousteau's beloved Palancar Reef.

Cruising Down to Mexico

"The place of the red corn"
Our first port of call, Costa Maya sits on the southern end of Mexico's Caribbean coast. After disembarking, we traveled inland to Chacchoben, one of the many Mayan ruins that have made the region famous. A 1.5-hour ride through towns, countryside and jungle brought us to a once-thriving city that now lies quietly in ruins. Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, the Maya became known for their advances in mathematics and architecture, and for their highly developed calendar. Long considered one of the great civilizations of the Americas, the Maya built magnificent stone cities while Europe was still in the Dark Ages.

Chacchoben, which means "place of the red corn," is one of these ancient cities. Even after the Maya abandoned the city, causing it to fall into ruins, local tribes continued to frequent the area, especially for hunting and farming. Despite these activities, the city basically remained unknow to the outside world until 1972 when American archaeologist Dr. Peter Harrison spotted the ruins from his helicopter. Today visitors can see six excavated buildings and can walk up the steps of the pyramids, which for the Maya, represented stairways to heaven.

Cruising Down to Mexico

The trip of a lifetime, both on and under the water!
Every day, cruise ships depart from different places for exotic ports of call. Earlier this year, my husband, Mike, and I were fortunate enough to be on one. Our ship, the Norwegian Spirit, measures 268 m in length and can accommodate 1,996 guests and over 900 crewmembers. This floating city offers everything a passenger could want, including a golf course, a library, an Internet cafe, an art gallery, Broadway-type productions and much more!

Economy vs. luxury travel
In the past, luxury cruises were mainly for the wealthy, but today there' something for almost everyone's budget. Staterooms range from small, inside rooms to suites equipped with a living room; dining room; large, ocean-view balcony; and butler services.

Food, glorious food!
Cruise ships pride themselves on their abundance of good food, and the Spirit live up to that claim. With 11 restaurants to choose from, food was everywhere. The culinary event of the week arrived with the "Chocoholic Buffet" - tables loaded with chocolate masterpieces, all ready to be sampled by happy passengers. Those who choose to go cruising on their next vacation can expect to be entertained and pampered and probably to gain a few pound too!

As Busy as Beavers

Junior wasn't happy about working so hard,
but he decided to quit making trouble.
He made up his mind to work and to make the best of it.
Together, he and his dad cut trees, dragged logs, and stacked sticks.
At last, the difficult task was complete.
"Yahoo! Our work is finished!" shouted Junior with relief.
"Now, let's go fishing! Let's go swimming!"
But there wasn't time.
For just then, lighting flashed and dark clouds began to fill the sky.
"Quick! Make a run for it!" Bucky warned.
And they scrambled into their newly built lodge.
There they waited while the heavy rains fell.
The stream flooded. The waters rushed by.

Yet the beaver lodge remained sturdy and strong.
After a time, the rains stopped, and the sun came out once again.
"We made it!" sighed Bucky.
"Why-ah, everything's all right!"
"Yes!" cried Junior. "And our dam made it too.
Look, every log is still in place.
Now I'm happy that we worked so hard!"
"Me, too," agreed his father.
"And now that our work is done. I'm going to make good on my promise.

As Busy as Beavers

Beaver advice: Work first, play later

Bucky was an eager beaver.
"Make way!" he cried. "Why-ah, here comes another log!"
"Aw, Dad!" Junior pined.
"We have plenty of logs already.
Let's just make do with the ones we have."
"Why-ah, certainly not!" replied Bucky.
"We must make sure that our lodge by the riverbank is sturdy and strong.
We must make use of all the logs we can.
Why-ah, after all, when the floodwaters come,
we don't want our home to be destroyed."
"Aw, Dad. Our makeshift dam is strong enough.
We'll make out all right. We always have.
Besides," complained Junior, "we've been as busy as beavers!"

"Well, after all, Junior, we are beavers!" his father reminded him.
"But I'd rather do other things! Can't we make time for fishing?"
begged Junior. "Or maybe take a little swim?"
"We will, we will," his father promised.
"But first we have work to do! Now, let's get back to cutting logs."
"But, Dad!" Junior cried. "My jaw has a gnawing pain.

Some people do take the risks seriously. However, they still want the tanned look without the resulting skin damage. hey get their tans from a bottle of tanning lotion. Not all Americans want tans, however.

China replaces US as India's largest trade partner

from http://in.finance.yahoo.com/

By fe Bureau

China has emerged as India's largest trading partner, replacing US in 2008-09. Apart from increasing trade engagement with the neighbouring country and weak demand for foreign goods in the US, which is reeling under recession contributed to this.

According to a reply filed by minister of state for commerce Jyotiraditya Scindia in Lok Sabha on Monday, bilateral trade engagement between India and China stood at Rs 1,63,202 crore (nearly $ 36 billion) in April to February 2008-09, an increase of nearly 7% over Rs 1,52,713 crore in the year ago period. In the same period under consideration, bilateral trade between India and the US dipped 7.5% and stood at Rs 1,55,353 crore (approximately $ 34 billion).

Exports from India had increased 3.4% in dollar terms and 17% in rupee terms during 2008-09.

Significantly, trade deficit - the difference between exports and imports - with China expanded 41% in the period under consideration and stood at Rs 92, 676 crore (nearly $20.3 billion), pointing towards fast expanding imports from China. This is nearly one fifth (18%) of India's trade deficit during the period under consideration, the highest for any of its trade partners.

According to data available with the commerce ministry, imports from China expanded 28% and stood at Rs 1,27,938 crore ($ 28.10 billion) in April to February period of 2008-09. In fact, increase in large number of chemical and metal items import from China has been of concern for India, which has initiated many anti-dumping and safeguard duty mechanism investigations to ascertain if Chinese companies are adopting any unfair trade practice.

Historically, the US has been India's top trading partner. Exports to the US have mostly been greater than imports, as a result of which India has enjoyed a trade surplus. However, hit by the economic recession, demand for goods in the US plummeted, impacting exports from India as well.

20090801 -- Cool Ideas for Hot Weather (1)

Cool Ideas for Hot Weather

Tips to help you keep cool this summer

Finding ways to beat the summer heat can be difficult but not impossible! Try a few of these fun ideas, and you'll cool off in no time.

Eat spicy food
Spicy food causes you to sweat. And as the sweat evaporates, it cools your body down.

Use cold sheets
Put away your blankets and sleep between sheets. Put your sheets in a plastic bag and then in the refrigerator about two hours before bedtime. Cold sheets can help lower your body temperature, which should help you fall asleep more easily.

Keep it light
Because dark colors absorb heat, wearing light-colored clothing keeps you more comfortable on hot days. Also, natural material like cotton lets air pass through, which cools your body.

Add water
Water also helps get rid of the heat. But if you're at school or work, it's not possible to take a nice, refreshing shower. Do the next best thing and run cool water on your wrists. In addition, you can run some on a towel and put it on the back of your neck.

Freeze some fruit
Snack on frozen watermelon and other fruit for a tasty way to beat this summer's heat!
