Entering a man's world

The first Indy 500 was run in 1911, but the first woman didn't participate untill 1977. Danica dreamed of provin that women could compete in the Indy car-racing world.

She signed with an Indy team in 2002. Needing more experience before takin on the Indy 500, Danica competed in easier races. Three years later, she became the fourth woman to race in the Indy 500. Danica finished fourth adn became an instant celebrity.

Proving herself

After that, many races passed with no wins. Some bagan criticizing Danica, saying she had a pretty face but not real talent. However, in April 2008, the 26-year-old finally achieved success when she won the Indy Japan 300. The victory made her the first woman ever to win an Indy car race.

Her team owner, Michael Andretti praised the 5-foot-2-inch, 100 pound champion. "She proved today that she's a winner (in probably) the first of many (wins)."

Only time will tell, but for now, Danica's doing what she loves -- driving fast.
