Making Movie Magic

SC: How important are visual effects to movies today? How important is it that effects look real of believable?

JH: Visual effects have made their way into nearly every feature film you see in theaters. A lot of people think visual effects are only used in the mega blockbusters with robots and explosions. But one great adage or saying of the business is that the best visual effect is the one you can't see. If you can't tell that something is a visual effect, then we've done our job well. Even movies without
very obvious effects are still loaded with effects.

JH: This could mean changing the color of the sky to a more beautiful color or making an actress look 10 years younger or 10 pounds skinnier.

SC: What do you think are the best visual effects scenes of all time?

JH: People say this industry was born with Star Wars. But besides that I would say scenes in the first Jurassic Park film. The scene where T-Rex attacks the Jeep is so frighteningly real; it looks real even 20 ears later. It looked so convincing that as a kid, the only thing you could think of was "Wow, that's a scary dinosaur."

eg: The evidence the police collected at the crime scene is very convincing.
