The World's Deadliest Animals

How do you choose the world's most dangerous animals?

Thousands of animals can kill humans. So which are the deadliest? Here are two ways to answer this question: Which animals have the deadliest poison? Many consider the golden poison-dart frog the most poisonous animal on Earth. Scientists have determined that two micrograms of its poison could kill a human. (The ink in a period weighs about six micrograms.) This 5-centimeter-long frog has enough poison to kill 10 to 20 people. Others regard the 5-meter-long box jellyfish as the most poisonous. In fact, its victims can die before they can get out of the water.

One of these jellyfish can kill 60 adults. Despite this, these jellyfish have only caused about 100 reported deaths in the last 100 years. Which animals cause the most deaths? Poisonous snakes like the Russell's viper and Indian cobra rank near the top of this list. Snakes kill at least 20,000 humans worldwide yearly. However, the mosquito, a more common creature, ranks number one. Mosquitoes carry and spread diseases to over 700 million people annually. As a result, mosquito bites lead to over 3 million human deaths per year. That makes the mosquito, by far, the world's deadliest animal.
