Discover the ancient wonders that make Egypt famous
Have you ever wanted to travel in a time machine? If you visit Egypt, you can! A trip to Egypt will take you back thousands of years. You can discover the glorious ruins of Egyptian civilization. Whether you visit impressive pyramids or ancient temples, you can touch the past.
Along the Nile
Aswan, in southern Egypt, is famous for its views of the Nile. The 6,650-km-long Nile River contrasts sharply with Aswan's golden desert landscape.
Walk down the Corniche, a river promenade, and watch the white sails of the boats on the water. Or go across the river where ancient tombs sit on a hillside. The paintings inside the tombs reveal early Egyptian life.
South of Aswan, near Sudan, lies the temple complex of Abu Simbel. Pharaoh Ramses II built two temples here out of rock. The larger one features four huge, 20-m-high statues of Pharaoh himself. Inside are four small statues that are placed so the sun shines on them twice a year.

The best time to visit Egypt is in the spring and fall to avoid the hot summer months. Mean times in Egypt are later than in most countries. Eat lunch around 3 p.m. and dinner around 9 p.m. The Nile flows south to north. So the southern part of Egypt is called "Upper Egypt" and the area surrounding Cairo is called "Lower Egypt."
