Chiling Tong(董繼玲)

Her passion for English has led to a productive life of helping others

"Studio Classroom is on the air!" Growing up , Chilling Tong was greeted by these words every morning, and in fact, if she didn't hear them, she knew she had overslept. From an early age, her mother impressed upon her the importance of learning English, and as Tong listened to Studio Classroom, she became curious about America. Thereafter, she had a desire to go to pursue her dreams.

Opportunities abound
Tong's dreams came true in 1984 when she became a student at California State University, Long Beach. After graduating in 1988, she began working for the State of California and over the next 12 years served in various ways. Tong's many roles included assistant secretary for international trade in the California Trade and Commerce Agency. In this capacity, she promoted the state's economic development as well as its trade and employment services.

An even greater opportunity came in 2001 when President George Bush named her commissioner of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Tong next accepted a position in the U.S. Department of Commerce, where she worked until January 2009. Now after 20 years of public service, Tong is taking on a new role.
