Milk's Big Month

Eat or drink something made from milk this month

In America, June is "Dairy Month," and there is no better time to learn about milk! Do you know the answers to these questions?

Q: How much milk does one cow make?

A: Cows produce an average of six gallons or 90 glasses of milk a day. For each gallon of milk produced, a cow must drink two gallons of water. Cows are milked two or three times a day.

Q: Is milk the only way to get calcium?

A: No, beans and green leafy vegetables also contain calcium.

Your body absorbs the same amount of calcium from two cups of broccoli as it does from one cup of milk. Most people, though, still consider eating dairy products the tastiest way to consume calcium.

Q: How much milk goes into one pound of cheese?

A: Ten pounds of milk are needed for just one pound of cheese! People have enjoyed cheese since at least 6,000 B.C. Today there are more than 2,000 varieties available. Drink a cup of milk, eat a piece of cheese, or enjoy some yogurt today!

What is a Cow?

Cows are always female.

A cow's offspring is called a calf.

A female calf is called a heifer until she has had her first calf and starts producing milk, at which time she officiall becomes a cow.

Males are called either bulls, which can have offspring or steers, which cannot.

All of these animals together, are collectively known as cattle.
